Factors to Consider When Buying Family Christmas Pajamas

Choosing the right set of matching Christmas pajamas for your family is about more than just finding a fun, holiday-inspired print (although that certainly plays a role). Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping:

• Sizes: First and foremost, you’ll want to look at the sizes offered. Most brands offer matching family pajamas in sizes for babies, toddlers, kids, and adults. Some even offer tiny pajamas for dogs, cats, and dolls. If you’re shopping for newborns, babies, and young toddlers, you’ll want to ensure their pajamas fit properly. “Babies should wear tightly fitted pajamas because excess fabric around their mouths increases their risk of suffocation, which increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS),” says Dr. Casares. “This matters most for the tiniest of infants up to 1 year of age, but tightly fitted pajamas are a plus for children of all ages because they allow them to move more freely and are often made up of more comfortable materials.”
• Style: Remember that the pajamas you’re buying aren’t only going to be worn by you, so they should come in a style the whole family will love wearing (especially picky toddlers). Consider a classic holiday style like red-and-green plaid, a character print featuring someone like the Grinch or Mickey Mouse, or something funny, like a saying that you’ll want to show off in photos. Also keep in mind how long you want these to last. A more versatile print, like plaid or snowflakes, will look fine throughout the rest of the winter, while something like a Santa Claus print might not feel right after the holidays.
• Materials: You’ll notice that kids’ pajamas will be advertised as flame-resistant or flame-retardant. According to Dr. Casares, sleepwear for children sized for 9-month-olds and up has to be flame-resistant to be sold in the U.S. under federal safety rules. While flame-retardant materials were found to be toxic in the 1970s, Dr. Casares says the chemicals were changed, and they’re now considered safe. An alternative to using flame-retardant materials is to make the PJs tight-fitting. “Tightly fitted sleepwear doesn’t allow air between the pajama’s fabric and a child’s skin, so if a fire does start around a child, it won’t have access to the oxygen it needs to ignite further,” she explains. As for other materials, Dr. Garshick recommends cotton. “It tends to be the most gentle on the skin and the least irritating,” she says. She says that choosing organic is a matter of choice and not always necessary. Dr. Casares notes that while it isn’t a must, she finds it to be softer and more durable than other fabrics.
• Comfort: Unless these pajamas are only being used for a quick photo op, you’ll want them to be comfy enough for kids to want to sleep in them. Both Dr. Garshick and Dr. Casares note that cotton is soft, comfy, and easy to move around in. As a mom of two myself, I love getting my kids bamboo pajamas because we love how stretchy and soft they are. Dr. Casares recommends avoiding any itchy or scratchy fabrics for little ones, adding, “I would steer clear of pajamas with extra beads, buttons, or embroidery to reduce the risk of choking hazards.” She notes that natural fabrics, like cotton, bamboo, linen, and wool, are more comfortable and offer better quality than synthetic options like nylon, polyester, and rayon. Lastly, if your kids have sensitive skin, Dr. Garshick recommends avoiding polyester or wool, saying, “These can be irritating on the skin and wool may be difficult for temperature control.”
• Cost: Family Christmas pajamas can range in price from about $10 or $15 per piece to $160 for a set. Remember that you’re buying a pair for every member of your family instead of just one pair, so add up the cost when considering the budget. Keep the material’s durability in mind too. I’ve found that my kids get a lot more extended wear out of bamboo pajamas because they stretch so much and wash well, so I don’t mind paying more for them.
