Etienne and Piper are the fourth generation Kilchers after their Swiss great-grandparents Yule Kilcher and Ruth Weber pioneered their way to Homer, Alaska during the tension of the Second World War. So, it only makes sense for Etienne and Piper to follow the legacy and appear in the show. Nonetheless, the children did not first appear on the show and there is reason behind it.

Like any other normal parents, Jane and Atz Lee wanted to protect them from the internet trolls and the pressures of fame. Jane explained this decision in a Facebook post on January 29, 2018, saying that they were proud of their kids, but preferred to keep their lives private.She added that they might appear on the show in the future if they chose to do so.

“I’ve been overwhelmed lately of people realizing we have children … that are not on the show… We are so proud of our kids, Piper 14 and Etienne 16, they are not a secret…we just keep their lives private and away from the AWFUL internet trollers ,ETC…but as they get older you may see them (on their own volition ) on an episode or two…. after I have made sure they can deal with all the craziness!!!!”
